From Facebook to Twitter to Skype, technology has opened up many different ways to keep in touch with family and friends from all over the country, and even the world.

These days, it seems like everyone is jumping on the social networking bandwagon.

Communication technology surrounds us — at home, on the road, in stores — literally everywhere. But is the ability to connect at all times necessary or is it a necessity that we have created?

We last heard from our favorite gloomy practitioner of the dismal art, the American Trucking Association’s chief economist, Bob Costello, back in September of ’09, when  he was—for an economist—rationally exuberant. “Most indicators,” Costello mumbled grudgingly, “indicate freight tonnage will exhibit moderate but inconsistent growth in the months ahead.”
